What is Tengkawang butter?
Borneo has some of the oldest rainforests in the world. Endangered tengkawang trees (Shorea Macrophylla) are indigenous to Borneo and grow up to 30m in height, they start producing illipe nuts after 8-9yrs and only fruit every 3-5 years.
Shorea Macrophylla trees are in rapid decline due to being logged and to make way for palm plantations, these trees regenerate by distribution from animals and flooding.
Tengkawang butter is traditionally used for cooking, applying to mouth sores and animal bites by the local Dayak tribes. Tengkawang butter melts on skin contact, preserves moisture and is restorative for dry skin leaving a silky feel.
By the use of Tengkawang butter we are helping to save our precious rainforests, giving the local farmers a purpose to protect this tree and the land from encroaching oil palm plantations.
